odie.commissioning
7 June 2002: Will 'Odie' Buford is commissioned into the United States Navy: a sweet ceremony held at the USS Constitution. Very pretty, lots of sun; Odie's parents and brother show up, and so do a bunch of teps. There's an initial one-on-one oath (the video -- sound quality is lousy, unfortunately), then various bigwigs troupe in and some big bigwig talks for a while. Then everyone oaths again as a group, and then the familes pin on the new tags, which is powerful and distressing to watch. Everyone's then given their orders officially, and then it's over. (If you're me, you leave just before this to get to Faye's dinner, cos reservations are at 6pm.) Dinner is with Faye and her parents + friends at L'Escofier. An excellent dinner, and a nice way to celebrate. Both Sarah + Faye graduated today: it was a really happy dinner.
