Friday, 8 March 2002. Van and I drove down to Saleilua to visit her Samoan host family: a host of generations living together in a big house and several nearby fales. We got in about six o'clock, in time for saa (a little prayer, a little singlng) and then had dinner. I was then invited to hang with the boyz: we drank warm diluted coconut-flavored vodka from a plastc bottle kava-style, later driving out in the pouring rain for beer and cigarettes when we ran out. We woke up the next morning and I took a pile of pictures of the kids and the family. They were all amazingly sweet and hospitable: it feels like I have a Samoan home to go back to any time I want.
